Over the last 12 years, Baltimore County Public Schools has redeveloped their K-12 science curriculum around the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). With an emphasis on engaging students with local phenomena and real-world problems, Geospatial Technologies have been a natural fit. This session will highlight the most recent iteration of that effort, the Environmental Empowerment Project. This includes a dive into the world’s largest scientific data collection ever conducted by fifth-grade students.

Operating a drone within the Washington, D.C. Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ) requires navigating a complex web of regulatory approvals. This session will cover the challenges of obtaining authorization for a single survey flight, including coordination with an alphabet of organizations such as the FAA, TSA, and Joint Base Andrews (JBA). While the flight itself is often the easiest part of any survey, securing permissions can be a far greater challenge. Learn about the step-by-step process, key hurdles, and lessons learned to streamline approvals for future operations in highly controlled airspace.
